How to Choose a Cafe POS System in Turkey: 7 Needs (2026 Guide)
A cafe works to a different rhythm from a restaurant. At half past eight in the morning there is a queue at the counter, and every order has to be entered and paid in twenty seconds. In the afternoon the tables fill and a customer with a laptop drinks three coffees in three hours. In the evening pickup orders rise. Three different jobs run in one day, and the POS has to carry all three on the same screen.
This guide covers the seven needs to check when choosing POS software for a cafe, what to test in a demo for each, and Genu's answer to them. A separate introduction for cafes is on the cafe POS solution page; here we focus on the selection criteria.

Is something missing or wrong?
Why a cafe is not chosen like a restaurant
| Cafe reality | What the POS should do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Morning queue | Enter an order without picking a table, pay in one tap. | Opening a table for every sale lengthens the queue; seconds add up to dozens of customers by the end of the day. |
| Counter, table and pickup at once | Run three service types on the same screen without mixing them. | If a counter order mixes into a table-service bill, the till and the end-of-day will not balance. |
| Bar / barista station | The coffee ticket goes to the barista, the toast to the kitchen. | Drinks and food mixed on one ticket mean wrong dishes and late service. |
| Repeat customers | Points, discounts, recognition; easy sign-in. | A cafe's revenue comes from regulars; loyalty is not decoration but part of the job. |
| Low margin, high volume | Recipe-based stock, grams, cost and waste tracking. | A small deviation in the grams of a cup of coffee is a profit difference at month end. |
| Small team | An interface learned with little training, waiters working from phones, shift tracking. | Seasonal staff must learn fast; a mistake at the till is expensive at peak time. |
| Outage risk | Keep selling when the internet drops. | If an outage hits at a busy hour, the queue waits at the till. |
1. Fast counter sales
The first test in a cafe POS is how long it takes to sell and close a coffee. Time it in the demo: pick the product, add to cart, Cash or Card, receipt. If there is a table-opening step, a customer-selection step or an extra confirmation, you will feel it in the queue.
- In Genu a counter sale is entered without picking a table; with the Cash or Card button it is paid and closed in a single tap. The flow is on the cashier and bills screen.
- Automatic rounding of cash payments to the nearest 5 TRY is an optional venue setting (off by default); the rounding difference is recorded separately.
- Split payment (part cash, part card, or splitting per person) is done from the same screen.
- The bill total can be written to a customer display (LED price screen) behind the till (Genu Desktop).
2. Pickup, the order-ready screen and queue management
In a cafe a pickup order arrives by phone or from the menu and the customer has to be told when it is ready. If the customer waits at the counter, a screen does the job instead of calling out names. Look at three things: does a pickup order appear as a separate type at the till, is the customer notified when it is ready, and does personal data appear on the screen in the room?
- In Genu, pickup and delivery run at the till as table-less fast-sale types; customer name, phone and (for delivery) an open address are attached to the bill. Detail on the delivery and pickup page.
- For pickup orders placed from the menu you have a commission-free channel of your own; no per-order fee is charged. This channel is in the Pro plan (online ordering).
- The order-ready screen: on a TV in the room, 'Preparing' and 'Ready' columns update live. Name, surname and phone do not appear on the screen; only the order code and table number.
- For customers waiting at the door at busy times, queue and waiting: joining the queue by scanning a QR and watching the number of groups ahead from their phone.
3. Barista station and kitchen separation
In a cafe the drink is at the bar and the food is in the kitchen; one order goes to two places. In the demo, enter an order with a latte and a toast and check that each item shows only at its own station.
- In Genu items are separated by station: drinks go to the bar printer or bar screen, food goes to the kitchen. More than one printer connects to one till.
- On the kitchen display each station sees only its own products; an order card carries a live timer and a delay alert.
- If the primary printer runs out of paper or loses its cable, the job is redirected to a backup printer; see thermal printer.
- Turkish characters (ş, ğ, İ) print correctly on the receipt printer; still test it on your own printer.
4. QR menu and QR ordering from the table
If a customer in a cafe can order from their table without joining the queue, the counter load drops. But if the order lands at the bar or kitchen without approval, wrong-table and prank orders become hard to handle. Ask who the order goes to and who approves it.
- In Genu the QR menu is in Basic and QR ordering with a cart is in Premium; each table order waits for waiter or manager approval, and after approval goes to the bar and kitchen (waiter approval).
- People sitting at the same table can add items to a shared cart from their own phones; the order is approved in one go.
- A stranger cannot scan the code and add an order to an occupied table: joining a table with an open bill asks for approval.
- Payment is taken at the table or the cashier; there is no online payment from the table. Detail on the QR menu page; for pricing models see the QR menu prices guide.
5. Loyalty and repeat customers
In a cafe the customer arrives with 'the usual'. When the POS recognises the customer, accumulates their points and measures their return, loyalty stops being decoration. The points to watch are that sign-in is easy and that personal data stays within consent limits.
- In Genu a customer signs in without a password, with a phone number or one-tap WhatsApp verification (WhatsApp customer sign-in).
- The loyalty programme: venue-specific points (a percentage of spend set by the venue, 1 point = 1 TRY), welcome, birthday and friend-invite points. The points rules are set from the venue panel.
- Segments (new, regular, loyal, at risk) are created automatically; a WhatsApp campaign can be sent to those at risk of leaving.
- Happy hour: an automatic discount tied to day and hour; it is calculated at the correct price at the till, including offline.
- Loyalty is in the Pro plan.
6. Recipe-based stock, cost and shifts
A cafe's margin lies in small products: a cup of coffee, a slice of cake. When a sale automatically deducts raw materials (coffee beans, milk, syrup) and shows product cost, it changes month-end stock counts and pricing decisions.
- Genu has stock cards, recipes (grams) with automatic deduction on sale, goods receipt, counts and waste records; product cost and alerts are reported (stock management). This layer is Premium and above.
- Shifts and attendance are in Premium; in short-shift, seasonal teams they record who worked when.
- Customer accounts and expenses are in Premium; supplier debt and payment records are kept.
7. If the internet goes down
When the internet drops in the morning queue, how much 'works offline' covers matters: only seeing open bills, or new sales, payment and closing in full? The detailed test method is in the offline POS guide.
- With Genu's Pro plan and Genu Desktop, during an outage you can enter a new order for a table, a pickup/delivery or a counter order, take payment, close the bill, and the kitchen and bill receipts print.
- When the connection returns, the sales taken during the outage flow to the cloud once; no order or receipt is processed twice. Detail on the offline cashier page.
- Genu Desktop runs on Windows only; the cashier screen opens inside Desktop (Genu Desktop).

A cafe demo test: five trials in ten minutes
- With a stopwatch: sell and close a coffee at the counter; how many taps, how many seconds?
- Enter an order with a latte and a toast; does each item appear at its own station?
- Scan a table QR with your phone and order; wait for the waiter's approval and see it land at the bar.
- Cut the till computer's internet; do new sales, payment and receipts work?
- At end of day, are counter, table and pickup totalled separately, and does the till balance?
Frequently asked questions
What is the best POS system for a cafe?
There is no single best; it depends on the cafe's needs. Fast counter sales, pickup, loyalty, a bar station and resilience to internet outages are the core criteria for a cafe. Genu answers them with one-tap Cash/Card at the counter, pickup with an order-ready screen, a barista station, a loyalty programme and a Desktop cashier that keeps working when the internet is down.
Does a cafe need QR ordering?
It is not essential but can help: a customer at a table orders without joining the queue and the counter load drops. What matters is that the order flows through approval and reaches the bar or kitchen correctly. In Genu QR ordering is in Premium and every table order depends on waiter or manager approval.
How much does cafe POS software cost?
It varies from hundreds of lira a month to tens of thousands a year depending on the product; the unit, VAT basis and scope differ. In Genu, just the QR menu is on Basic at $199/year, QR ordering and stock are on Premium at $499/year, and bills, the cashier and the kitchen display for counter and table are on Pro at $999/year (all VAT included). See the prices guide for the calculation method.
Does a loyalty programme work in a cafe?
Because a large share of cafe revenue comes from returning customers, a loyalty programme works directly in a cafe. In Genu the customer signs in without a password, accumulates venue-specific points (1 point = 1 TRY), earns welcome, birthday and friend-invite points; the venue can send a WhatsApp campaign to customers at risk of leaving.
Does selling stop in a cafe if the internet goes down?
Not with Genu's Pro plan and Genu Desktop: during an outage a new order is entered, payment taken, the bill closed and receipts printed; when the connection returns the records are processed to the cloud once. Genu Desktop runs on Windows only.
Does it work with my own computer and printer for a cafe?
The cashier screen opens in the browser and in the Genu Desktop app for Windows; waiters work from phones. Receipt printers connect as ESC/POS thermal printers through USB, network or the Windows print queue. Verify by printing a test receipt with Turkish characters on your own printer.
